Stop signs

You learn to stop completely at a Stop sign before you go.

How to know who goes first

  1. Stop at the solid white line.
  2. Stop completely, even if nobody is coming.
  3. Look both ways, then go when it is clear.
STOP

A worked example

A has a Stop sign. B cycles along the major road.

  1. Look for the eight-sided sign and the solid line.
  2. A stops at the line.
  3. B goes first, then A.
More examples

A has a Stop sign. B and C are on the major road.

  1. A stops completely and gives way to B and C.
  2. They do not have to wait for each other or for A.
STOP

Two roads meet. Both have a Stop sign.

  1. Both drivers stop.
  2. Give way to anyone on the road you join, then go when it is clear.
STOPSTOP

Watch out

  • You slow down but your wheels keep turning.

A Stop sign means a complete stop. Your wheels stand still.

Tips

  • Stop at the solid line, not past it.
  • Even if nobody is coming, you still stop.

Why it works

A Stop sign is on a junction where it is not safe to just slow down. You stop at the solid white line, even if the road looks empty. Then you give way to the traffic on the major road.
