Give Way lines

You learn to wait at Give Way lines until the major road is clear.

How to know who goes first

  1. Look for two broken white lines across your lane.
  2. Give way to traffic on the major road.
  3. Go when there is a safe gap.

A worked example

A comes out of a side road and has Give Way lines. B drives along the major road.

  1. Look at the lines across the road: A has them, B has not.
  2. A gives way to B.
  3. First B, then A.
More examples

A and C drive on the major road. B joins from the side road.

  1. B has the Give Way lines.
  2. A and C are on the major road and do not have to wait.
  3. B waits for both.

Two roads meet. Only one has Give Way lines.

  1. Find the road with the lines.
  2. That driver waits.
  3. The other road goes first.

Watch out

  • You look only to the right.

Look right, left, and right again. Traffic can come from both sides.

  • You creep over the lines while you look.

Stop at the lines if you need to. Go only when the road is clear.

Tips

  • Cyclists and motorbikes are easy to miss: look twice.
  • On a road with no lines and no signs, nobody has priority: slow down and be ready to stop.

Why it works

Two broken white lines across your lane mean Give Way. The traffic on the major road already has the right of way, and you must not make it slow down or swerve. You go when there is a safe gap.
