The four nations of the UK

You learn the four nations of the UK by finding England first and looking around it.

How to find it again

  1. Find England, the biggest nation.
  2. Look north: that is Scotland.
  3. Look west: that is Wales.
  4. Look across the Irish Sea: that is Northern Ireland.

A worked example

Tap Scotland.

  1. Find England first.
  2. Look north of England.
  3. That is Scotland.
More examples

Tap Wales.

  1. Find England first.
  2. Look west of England.
  3. That is Wales.

Tap Northern Ireland.

  1. It is across the Irish Sea, on the island of Ireland.
  2. Find England first.
  3. Look north-west of England.
  4. That is Northern Ireland.

Watch out

  • You tap the Republic of Ireland when Northern Ireland is asked.

The Republic of Ireland is a different country. Northern Ireland is the smaller part, in the north of the island.

  • You think England and Great Britain are the same.

Great Britain is the big island: England, Scotland and Wales. The UK also has Northern Ireland.

Tips

  • The Republic of Ireland is on the map too, but it is not a nation of the UK.

Why it works

The United Kingdom is made up of four nations: England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. England is the biggest. If you can find England, the other three are one step away.
