Lights and bright clothes
You learn that a bike needs lights after dark, and bright clothes help.
How to know who goes first
- After dark, switch on a white light at the front.
- Switch on a red light at the back.
- Wear bright or reflective clothes.
A worked example
It is dark. A has no lights, B has lights, C has lights and a bright jacket.
- Look at the lights on each bike.
- A has no lights, so nobody can see A in the dark.
- Tap A.
More examples

- In fog you also switch on your lights.
- Look at who wears bright clothes.
- The cyclist with lights and a bright jacket is easy to see.
What colour is the rear light?
- The rear light is red.
- The front light is white.
Try it yourself
After dark a bicycle needs a white light at the front and a ____ light at the back. Type the colour.
Watch out
You think that lights are only for the dark night.
Use lights in fog and rain too, when it is hard to see.
Tips
- Check that your lights work before you leave.
- A red reflector on the back is also required.
Why it works
After dark, a bike must have a white light at the front and a red light at the back. Lights show drivers where you are and which way you are going. Bright and reflective clothes help too.
