Blue lights

You learn to make way for an ambulance, fire engine or police car with blue lights.

How to know who goes first

  1. Listen for sirens and look for blue flashing lights.
  2. Stay calm and make space.
  3. Let the emergency vehicle go first.

A worked example

A drives to a junction. An ambulance with blue lights comes from the side.

  1. Look and listen: there are blue flashing lights and a siren.
  2. The ambulance goes first.
  3. A waits, so first the ambulance, then A.
More examples

A police car with blue lights comes up. A cyclist and a car are also there.

  1. The police car goes first.
  2. Then the normal rules apply to the others.

A has a green light. A fire engine with blue lights comes from the side.

  1. Even with a green light, you let the fire engine go first.
  2. Blue lights come before the signal.

Watch out

  • You freeze or swerve.

Stay calm and make space in a safe way. Do not do anything sudden.

Tips

  • Look and listen for sirens, also on a bike.
  • Never break the law to make way, for example by driving through a red light.

Why it works

Blue flashing lights and a siren mean an emergency. The vehicle goes first because someone needs help quickly. You stay calm, check the road, and let it through.
