Capital letters

You learn to make a capital letter without leaving the home row: Shift with the pinky of your other hand.

How to find the key

  1. Look at which hand types the letter.
  2. Hold Shift with the pinky of your other hand.
  3. Then tap the letter.
  4. Let go of Shift and go back to the home row.

  2. Hold Shift with your right pinky.
  3. Tap the t with your left index finger and let go of Shift.
  4. Type im with your right hand.
  5. This is how you type Tim.
More examples

Kate

  1. Look at which hand types the k: the right.
  2. Hold Shift with your left pinky.
  3. Tap the k with your right middle finger and let go of Shift.
  4. Type ate.

Sam

  1. The s is typed by the left hand.
  2. Hold the right Shift with your right pinky.
  3. Tap the s with your left ring finger.
  4. Release Shift and type am.

Watch out

  • You hold Shift with the same hand as the letter, and your hand leaves the home row.

Say it in your head: letter left, Shift right. Letter right, Shift left.

  • You let go of Shift too late, and the next letter is also a capital.

Release Shift as soon as the capital is there, and then carry on.

Tips

  • A capital letter needs two hands: one for the letter and one for Shift.
  • Say it in your head: Shift down, letter, Shift up.

Why it works

There is a Shift key on the left and on the right. If your left hand types the letter, your right pinky holds Shift, and the other way round. Both hands stay on the home row, so you do not have to search afterwards.
