A capital is for the name of one particular thing. River is a common noun, but Thames is the name of one river.

Tips

  • The first word of a sentence always has a capital letter, but that is not the one these questions ask for.

Why it works

A capital letter shows that a word is a name. Names of people, places, days, months and special days all start with one, and so does the word I. Without it, a reader does not see that the word is a name.
