What percent discount?
You learn to work out what percentage discount you get.
How to work it out
- Work out how much money comes off: old price minus new price.
- Write it as a fraction: what comes off on top, the old price underneath.
- Make it hundredths: the number over 100 is the percentage.

First £120, now £90. How much discount is that in percent?
Watch out
You divide by the new price: 2060.
A percentage discount is always out of the old price. Put that under the line.
You give the amount in pounds as the answer: 20.
The question asks for a percentage. Write the 20 pounds as a part of the old price.
Tips
- Check: 25% off £80 is £20 off.
Why it works
A discount in percent says which part of the old price comes off. So you compare the discount with the old price, not with the new one. Turn it into hundredths and you have the percentage.
