Counting frame to 20
You learn to count beads to 20: the full bar is 10, the bottom bar you count on top.
How to work it out
- Has the whole top bar been pushed to the left? Then you already have 10 beads.
- Add the beads on the bottom bar.
A worked example
How many beads do you see? (10 above and 4 below)
- See that the top bar is full: that is 10.
- Count the beads on the bottom bar: 4.
- Add them: 10 + 4 = 14.
- There are 14 beads.
More examples
How many beads do you see? (10 above and 7 below)
- The top bar is full: 10.
- Count the bottom bar: 5 red and 2 white is 7.
- Add them: 10 + 7 = 17.
- There are 17 beads.
How many beads do you see? (10 above and 10 below)
- The top bar is full: 10.
- The bottom bar is also full: 10.
- Add them together: 10 + 10 = 20.
- There are 20 beads.
Watch out
You still count the top bar bead by bead, even though you know it is full.
A full bar is 10, always. Say 10 and then count on.
Tips
- Do you see 10 and a few? Then the tens come first: 14 is 10 and 4.
Why it works
A full bar always has 10 beads: 5 red and 5 white. So you don't have to count them. You start at 10 and only count the beads on the bottom bar. This is how you see that 14 is just 10 and 4.
