Converting currencies

You learn to change amounts in pounds to foreign money using an exchange rate.

How to work it out

  1. The exchange rate tells you how much foreign money you get for £1.
  2. Multiply the number of pounds by the rate.

A worked example

£20 to dollars (rate 1.10)

  1. Look at the rate: 1 pound is 1.10 dollars.
  2. Multiply the number of pounds by the rate.
  3. Work out: 20 × 1.1 = 22.
  4. So £20 is 22 dollars.
More examples

£40 to Swiss francs (rate 0.95)

  1. Multiply the amount by the rate.
  2. Work out: 40 × 0.95 = 38.
  3. So £40 is 38 Swiss francs.

£10 to yen (rate 160)

  1. Multiply by the rate: 10 × 160 = 1600.
  2. So £10 is 1600 yen.

Try it yourself

  1. Convert using the exchange rate

£1 is worth $1.25. How many dollars do you get for £40?

  2. Convert using the exchange rate

£1 is worth $1.25. How many dollars do you get for £30?

Watch out

  • You divide by the rate instead of multiplying.

From pounds to foreign money you always multiply by the exchange rate.

Tips

  • From pounds to foreign money you multiply by the exchange rate.

Why it works

Abroad you pay with different money, like dollars or yen. The exchange rate tells you how much foreign money 1 pound is worth. Multiply, and you can work out any amount.
