Counting block buildings

You learn to read data from a tower of blocks or a table.

How to work it out

  1. Look at the height of each tower in the building.
  2. Also count the blocks hidden at the bottom.
  3. Add up the heights of all the towers.

A worked example

A tower has 8 blocks. Another has 5. How many altogether?

Count the blocks: 8 + 5 = 13.

Watch out

  • You only count the top blocks you can see straight away.

Under every high block there are other blocks. Look at the height of each tower and count every layer.

Tips

  • Count the blocks in each tower carefully.

Why it works

A tower of blocks shows data by stacking. You count the blocks in each tower to find the value. A table does the same by listing numbers.
